Chapter 16

“What’s happened?” Miriam demanded. She had met Mac and the others by the door and they now all stood dripping on the black-and-white tiles of the floor.

“He says the Clarks in the next cottage, they’re dead,” Mr Brent’s voice quavered.

Emilie Trudeau came out of the dining room, presumably attracted by their voices, and Mac beckoned to her. “Could you get Mr and Mrs Brent and Mr and Mrs Prentice some coffee and maybe something to eat? And if there are spare rooms available, that would be a real help.”

She frowned, puzzled, but to Mac’s relief just nodded and led the two couples away.

“The Clarks are dead?” Miriam asked. “I’m taking it that it’s not natural causes.”

“Murdered, looks like blunt force trauma, on the face of it the same as Charlie Brewster.”

“What the hell is going on, Mac? The Clarks weren’t even meant to be at the wedding.”

“Maybe they saw something they shouldn’t have done. Maybe that little scam with the necklace attracted the wrong kind of attention. I just don’t know.”

“I should get over there,” Miriam said.

“Not a lot you can do except drip on yet another floor,” Mac said with feeling, “and I think I’ve done enough of that for both of us. I’ve photographed the scene best I can and secured the house. The back door was open, that’s why I went inside. I stopped at the kitchen door. It was pretty obvious both were dead and there was nothing I could do. The back door key was still hanging on a hook by the door so I used that to lock up. I think the chances of the killer having touched it are remote but I got the Brents to give me a sandwich bag to put it in.”

He delved into the pocket of his borrowed waterproofs and removed the large old key.

“Get it labelled and add it to the box,” Miriam told him, indicating their makeshift incident room. “I’ve been in touch with DI Sullivan but still no ETA on their arrival. I’ve sent her all the photographic evidence we’ve got so far and electronic copies of the statements, contact details and anything else we’ve put together so far. Matthew’s a dab hand with the scanner and the laptop and Emilie has got everyone to sign the release forms they use when people allow their photos and reviews to be used in the publicity, just so we’re covered for data protection, not that I see anyone making trouble but you never know, do you?”

“I bet it was fun explaining to DI Sullivan who Matthew Montmorency is.” Mac grinned at her.

“I think she’s just grateful we’re on scene,” Miriam said.

Mac shed his waterproofs and parked them beside the front door, certain he’d need them again. He followed Miriam into the incident room. It had developed a bit since he’d been gone. Arthur Nedham had set up a card table in the corner and was monitoring the cameras not just overlooking the body but at several other locations around the house and gardens.
